Boogaloo Joe JONES – Right On Brother 1970
2008 Issue.

Blues

Guitarist Ivan Joseph Jones, better known as Boogaloo Joe Jones, was a soul-jazz artist whose brand of cool, funky music can be heard on Prestige releases from the late 1960s and early `70s. The newly reissued RIGHT ON BROTHER (1970) will give contemporary listeners a healthy dose of Jones’s groovy brew. And fans of Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, and Wes Montgomery will know what to expect from Jones’s blend of hard bop and R&B. Support from saxophonist Rusty Bryant and drummer Bernard keeps the groove solid, while Jones demonstrates his feel-good bluesy skills on the fretboard.

Boogaloo Joe Jones is an underrated guitarist and this album shows his abilities to good effect. The interplay among the musicians is top notch, and Jones’ efforts are solid as well. The lineup on this album are Jones on guitar; Rusty Bryant on tenor and alto sax; Charles Earland, organ; Jimmy Lewis, bass; and Bernard Purdie, drums.
If you have Boogaloo Joe Jones “Legends of Acid Jazz vol. 1,” you essentially have this album. Nearly every track on this album is on the “Legends” disc. The only difference is that this disc contains 2 “single versions” of songs on the “Legends” disc, in addition to the full length versions. Those songs are “Right On” and “Someday We’ll Be Together.”

An outstanding remaster by Rudy Van Gelder of an unexpected title. In truth, I had thought of this title as not an obvious choice for the RVG series, but it turns to be an inspired pick, as both Rusty Bryant and Jones, as well as the rest, are on top form and Pretty Purdie lays down top grooves. Completely recommended!!

A mostly original program of solid, relaxed, and funky (if not quite inspirational) soul-jazz on this 1969 date, which also features Rusty Bryant on sax and Bernard Purdie behind the drums. The album’s been combined with the 1970 follow-up, Boogaloo Joe, on the Legends of Acid Jazz CD reissue.
