Otis GRAND – Perfume and Grime 1996

Otis GRAND – Perfume and Grime 1996

Winner – Best Guitar Blues CD 1996 – Real Blues Magazine (USA) Awards

This is an excellent blues collection. Guitar work by Otis is A+++++, special guests Curtis Salgado, Darrell Nulisch and Tony Lynn Washington are great singers that add an unbelievable touch to this wonderful CD. Not really a bad song in this collection, my two favorites are “Has Been Husband” and “How Come”. If you love the blues, this is a great one to add to your library.
By J. Monteith.
Otis Grand – who is, unquestionably, the biggest star of British Blues and the only UK artist in the genre to have had significant success in America for decades – releases his brand new album” Perfume & Grime ” on Sequel Records. This new release was recorded in New Orleans on Feb. 1996 with some of America’s top blues musicians, includinging Joe Louis Walker, Curtis Salgado, Luther Allison, and Eddie Bo.
Otis is a british blues guitarist, but he has any success in the US. And on this CD there are any US blues musician, like the 2 famous singers: Darrell Nulisch and Curtis Salgado. Two of them has great soulful voice, but I like more Nulisch tracks on this album. But the other players are well-known too, like Bruce Elsensohn on keyboards, Steve Gomes on bass, Rob Stupka on drums.
If could be only one track on this CD, the title track, I would like too. The track “Perfume and Grime” starts very interesting with an oriental acoustic guitar line, and upper is a blues guitar. And after one minute it evolved to a real instrumental slow blues featuring two lead guitar. Beside Otis, there’s the great Luther Allison. Wonderful!
And there’s two more slow blues: the standard “When My Heart Beats Like a Hammer” and another instrumental “Magic Mood” including an accordion solo by Al Rapone.
The other highlights are: “Six Ways” and “Between Heaven and Hell”.
