Dana Fuchs is an American singer, songwriter, actress and voice over talent most famous for her role as Sadie in the 2007 film Across the Universe. Her band sold out shows at the Mercury Lounge, the Stephen Talkhouse and BB King’s, sharing the bill with national acts, including Little Feat, Marianne Faithfull and Etta James. The Dana Fuchs Band put out a CD, Lonely For A Lifetime in 2003. Fuchs has claimed that she “wanted to capture a soulful and rocking vibe…but with an earthiness to it.” Her second album, Live in NYC, was issued on April 1, 2008 by Antler King Records. Fuchs plays Sadie in the Julie Taymor film Across the Universe. She also played the singing Janis Joplin in the Eric Nederlander production of Randall Myler’s off Broadway musical Love, Janis. With Jack Livesy, Fuchs wrote and performed songs on the soundtrack for the Big Beach production of Laurie Collyer’s independent film Sherrybaby including the opening and closing title songs.

In a case of “art imitates life” Dana Fuchs is a blues-rock singer best known for playing blues-rock singers on stage and screen. The Wildwood, Florida native won over both audiences and critics with her portrayal of Janis Joplin in the off-Broadway hit “Love, Janis.” She drew national attention playing Sadie (and performing killer versions of the Beatles classics “Oh! Darling,” “Don’t Let Me Down,” and “Helter Skelter”) in the 2007 film Across the Universe.

But local fans have the opportunity to catch Dana Fuchs in her original, most natural role – performing her own material with her band – when she headlines the first night of First State Bluesfest ’09 in the Fire and Ice lounge at Dover Downs Casino tonight (Friday, March 27) at 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be obtained by calling the Bluesfest ’09 hotline at  (302) 672-7022 or Dover Downs VIP Services at (800) 711-5882.
Inspired by legendary singers like Etta James, Otis Redding, Bobby Bland, Aretha Franklin, and Mavis Staples, Fuchs started her first band when she was 16. At age 19 she moved to New York. She struggled as a solo artist until she met guitarist Jon Diamond at an open mic blues jam. Diamond had an established track record, having toured with Joan Osborne and W.C. Handy Award winner Debbie Davies. Immediately recognizing a musical chemistry, Fuchs and Diamond formed the Dana Fuchs Band.

Fuchs has released two albums; her debut Lonely for a Lifetime came out in 2003, followed by Live in New York City in 2008. She has completed work on a new studio album, which should be released later this year. For now, however, Fuchs is concentrating on bringing her music to the people one show at a time.
