Terry CALLIER – Alive 2001

Jazz

On his latest release, Alive, singer/songwriter Terry Callier shows off his considerable talent as a storyteller. On “Lament To The Late A.D.,” Callier tackles an emotion-drenched topic, the recent tragic death of Amadou Diallou at the hands of New York City’s police: “New York, New York, I thought I could depend on you.” This song screams with disappointment and loss, telling us how the writer has been devastatingly let down by the Big Apple.
Throughout Alive, Callier’s backup band is near flawless, jumping from up-tempo swing in the opener to a mild-mannered jazz/soul fusion in “Step Into The Light,” a harrowing tale of gangland violence. Callier’s expressive and theatrical voice is reminiscent of the finest dramatic jazz storyteller of the early ’60s, Oscar Brown. Check out Terry Callier’s fine new album for a completely unique look at the world.

It’s no surprise that Terry Callier’s Alive is a live recording of a London appearance, released by a London label. Callier, a deeply soulful jazz guitarist and singer from Chicago who’d been recording since 1962, was virtually forgotten when, in 1991, he was contacted by London label Acid Jazz to license his “I Don’t Want to See Myself (Without You)”. The deal lead to Callier almost immediately becoming a star on the London live jazz/ soul/ hip-hop circuit, and eventually produced a major label deal with Polygram/Talkin’ Loud. This beautifully recorded live album covers some of his earliest tracks, like 1972’s brilliant “Ordinary Joe”, which gets his set started in breathtaking fashion. From there Alive goes right up to work from Callier’s Time Peace and Lifetime, including the cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready”. The album closes with the 1983 self-financed track that originally sparked Acid Jazz’s interest and led to an extra chapter in a story that looked likely to end far too soon.
